Starting our Christmas baking with Sucre a la creme

Now that the snow has come in full force to our little area my daughter has decided that she wants to get into the Christmas spirit – what better way to get into Christmas spirit by putting on Christmas music and doing some Christmas baking?

Since we were quite literally snowed in, this was the perfect time to do some baking and get a head start on the upcoming holidays!

We started out with a very simple recipe that we could have as a treat to keep us going through the day. This recipe is so good that you can only take it in little amounts because it is so rich and sugary, but the kids love it. It is a traditional Quebec recipe similar to fudge called Sucre a la creme, this recipe has been adapted from several others and it is microwavable so it can be done in a flash.  Also very easy for young kids to help prepare and they love the final result.

Sucre a la creme

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup sugar

1 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon of vanilla

Sucre a la creme

Combine the brown sugar,  sugar and the  cream in a microwavable bowl. Stir to mix and then place in microwave for 4 to 5 minutes depending on how powerful your microwave is. Stir after the five minutes and then place back into microwave for another 4-5 minutes.

Remove from microwave and add vanilla and stir, let stand for a few minutes. Transfer to a larger bowl and beat for approx 5 minutes with hand mixer until it starts to thicken and soft peaks form. Pour into a casserole dish or pan lined with parchment paper.  Place in the refrigerator for one hour or until it starts to firm up and then cut into small pieces. Now enjoy! Just remember it is very rich and definitely not calorie wise. So a little can go along way! 🙂 Keep refrigerated!
