Dinner in 15 min – grilled ham and Cheese – comfort food! #Dinnerin15

One of the things that matters to me when thinking about meals for my family, is making sure that they have enough protein. A meal doesn’t need to be a big elaborate meal, but it needs to be healthy. Even a nice sandwich can be a great meal depending on what is in it.

Now that back to school is next week and so many things start back up in the fall, meal times during the week can be all over the place again as different things come up for everyone.

Around here, we all love grilled cheese sandwiches, but then again… who doesn’t? The ultimate comfort meal when kids are overloaded with homework or you are on a deadline; especially as it starts to cool outside.
I love this twist on the classic because it is so easy and can be made in less than 15 min and boosts the protein amount in the meal. It is also one of those things that kids can learn to make themselves easily, ( as long as they are old enough to use the stove) so when they are hungry they don’t have to wait for you to make them something. (Bonus!)

Grilled ham & cheese { per sandwich]

  • 2 slices of Gluten free bread [although, if you are ok with gluten – then by all means have regular bread! ]
  • ½ tbsp melted or softened butter [gf bread tears easily, so I like to melt it …also uses less]
  • ½ cup shredded old cheddar [I prefer to shred cheese as it melts easier than slices]
  • 1 slice of Schneiders Country Naturals ham – approx ⅛ in slices

Oil a small fry pan lightly – add in slices of ham and heat through, while ham is heating, butter outside of bread [ I use a pastry brush for the melted butter].
Remove and set ham aside for the moment, place slice of bread buttered side down into pan.
Spread ½ of shredded cheese over the slice of bread, covering completely, place heated ham slices on top of cheese then spread remaining cheese on top of ham. Cover with remaining slice of bread – butter side out. Flip when 1st side is done to you liking. Continue heating until cheese is thoroughly melted and both side of bread are nicely browned. An ooey, gooey cheese treat!

Serve with vegetables and enjoy!
